Overview

Decatur Morgan County Tourism needed a brand the community could actually believe in.

After a previous rebrand was poorly received, local trust was low, and the CVB needed more than another campaign. They needed a true destination brand rooted in what made Decatur Morgan County worth visiting.

The Challenge

Decatur Morgan County sits in a strong location between Birmingham, Huntsville, and Nashville, but its tourism identity felt unclear. The challenge was to uncover what residents, business owners, decision makers, and visitors all saw as the county’s real draw.

We also had to navigate how to position the Tennessee River as a tourism asset in a way that felt authentic, especially as the riverfront continued to grow through new development, events, festivals, and hospitality opportunities.

The Strategy

Good Grit began with a full discovery, audit, and research phase. We reviewed existing tourism materials, including the website, digital advertising, TV, billboards, paid and earned media, and print collateral.

Through that process, we realized Decatur Morgan County had been sold several “rebrands” over the years, but most were really short-term marketing campaigns. What they needed was a long-term brand platform.

We surveyed board members, decision makers, local business owners, residents, and more than 250 ideal tourists across Alabama and Tennessee. The research revealed a clear opportunity: visitors wanted good food, free or low-cost adventures, hiking trails, downtown shopping, scenic views, and educational experiences. Locally, there was a shared desire to grow Decatur Morgan County as an adventure tourism destination.

The strategy became clear: lean into the river, the outdoors, the downtown, and the kind of easy, spontaneous travel that makes someone pull off I-65 and want to come back.

The Execution

We built a true destination brand that could grow with the county.

The new brand centered around Decatur Morgan County’s strongest assets: the Tennessee River, outdoor adventure, historic downtown, local food, community pride, and family-friendly attractions like Cook Museum of Natural Science.

The tagline, Find Your Flow, became the anchor of the brand. It captured the gift Decatur Morgan County offers visitors: kayaking on the river, walking through downtown, grabbing a beer at an award-winning brewery, finding a new favorite shop, and moving at a pace that feels easy and memorable.

The work included:

Brand Strategy – Built a long-term destination platform rooted in research, community sentiment, and visitor behavior.

Tourism Positioning – Positioned Decatur Morgan County around outdoor adventure, riverfront growth, downtown charm, and spontaneous drive-market travel.

Tagline Development – Created Find Your Flow as the central invitation for visitors.

Brand Identity – Developed a mark with movement, energy, and a clear connection to place.

Messaging Pillars – Defined the core stories that could support tourism growth across the county.

Website & Digital Direction – Helped shape a stronger digital presence so visitors could easily find what they needed to plan a trip.

Ongoing Creative Partnership – Continued supporting Decatur Morgan County Tourism as the brand expanded across campaigns, trails, merchandise, and visitor-facing materials.
